Board of Education
Constitutional Authority and Oversight
The Idaho State Board of Education is established in the Idaho Constitution and is charged with the general supervision, governance, and control of the state’s public education system. The Board oversees K-12 public schools and postsecondary institutions, sets policy, and works to ensure a coordinated and effective education system that serves all Idahoans.
Board Members
The State Board of Education consists of eight voting board members. Seven of the eight voting members are appointed by the governor for terms of five years. The eighth voting member, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, is an ex-officio voting member elected to a term of four years.
