Building Idaho's Healthcare Workforce
The Idaho State Board of Education supports undergraduate and graduate medical education programs that prepare students for careers in healthcare and address the state’s workforce needs. Through partnerships with regional institutions and strategic planning efforts, Idaho expands access to medical education and strengthens healthcare delivery across the state.
Idaho partners with regional institutions to provide access to undergraduate medical and health profession programs for Idaho students. These programs allow students to begin their medical education while maintaining strong connections to Idaho communities.
Programs include partnerships with the University of Washington School of Medicine (WWAMI), the University of Utah School of Medicine, the Washington-Idaho Regional Veterinary Medical Education Program, and the Idaho Dental Education Program
Undergraduate Medical Education Programs
The Washington-Wyoming-Alaska-Montana-Idaho (WWAMI) Regional Medical Education Program allows a limited number of Idaho students the opportunity to study medicine using the combined resources of the University of Idaho and the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.
Idaho partially subsidizes the cost of fees and tuition for each Idaho student admitted to the program. A limited number of Idaho residents are admitted to the University of Utah School of Medicine under an agreement with the University of Utah. Idaho partially subsidizes the cost of tuition and fees for each Idaho student admitted to the program.

Please Note: Medical school applicants who choose to apply to both the WWAMI and University of Utah programs only need to submit a worksheet to certify residency through one institution. That institution will automatically provide a copy of your approved residency certification to the other institution.
The University of Idaho and Washington State University Cooperative Program in Veterinary Medicine provides a limited number of Idaho residents the opportunity to study for a career in veterinary medicine using the resources of both the University of Idaho and the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Students apply through the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS) by selecting Washington State University as their program choice.

The Idaho Dental Education Program (IDEP) provides financial support for a limited number of Idaho students admitted to the School of Dentistry at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.

Graduate Medical Education (GME)
Graduate Medical Education programs support residency and fellowship training opportunities that prepare physicians to practice in Idaho. These programs are a key component of the state’s strategy to increase the number of practicing physicians and improve access to care, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
The Idaho State Board of Education works with partners across the state to expand GME opportunities and align training programs with workforce needs.
Policy & Strategic Planning
The Board develops and supports strategic plans that guide the expansion and alignment of medical education programs in Idaho. These efforts focus on increasing access, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that education pathways meet the state’s long-term healthcare workforce needs.
