(Moscow). The Idaho State Board of Education today approved tuition and fee increases for the state’s public universities and colleges as proposed by the institutions.

The following tuition/fee rates are now in effect for the 2012-2013 academic year, which starts in the fall:

In their presentations to the board, institutions made the case that increases were needed to cover rising costs and maintain quality programs. This year’s requests were among the lowest in recent years.

“Our goal is to keep higher education in Idaho as affordable and cost effective as possible,” said Board President Richard Westerberg. “For every 10 students who graduate from high school, about three go on to college. We have to get more Idaho students into post-secondary education, and we recognize that cost is a significant barrier.”

Tuition and fees for Idaho’s public higher education institutions will remain among the lowest in the western states. “Idaho still has the best deal around,” said board member Milford Terrell.

The State Board of Education meeting will continue on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at 8:00am Pacific/9:00am Mountain.
